THE WRATH AND THE DAWN - finally reviewing (sorry it has taken me a bit!)

The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1)

I met Renee Ahdieh at our annual YA Fan Frenzy put on by Andersons Bookstore nearby.
She was a genuine  sweet person.  I had been told my a few people to read it, so I bought it and had it signed.  I mean if, multiple people tell you to read something, usually it is good, right?
So I put it on my shelf to read and waited.  And that poor book kept waiting.  Then my hometown's Lit Fest posted guest speakers and it was none other than Renee Ahdieh again.  Well, that should tell me to read it, right?  But alas, I let other books push their way to the front of the TBR pile.
So, I finally got tired of waiting, and started it.  And wow, am I glad I did!
And I went last Friday night to see Renee speak at our Lit Fest.  I have attached a picture of her speaking.  Yep that back is me and my two lovely little girls with me.  I want them to meet authors when they are able to and explore the many amazing worlds that these gifted people write about and share with us.  In the car home, I was told that she was lovely and that when they get old enough, they would like to read the book too as it seemed right up their alleys.
So thank you Renee Ahdieh for sharing this amazing book with the world - it is a true gem!

I have had the immense pleasure of meeting this author twice now and each time I have, I find her to be the most genuine and thoughtful person.  She is so incredibly amazing to talk to and listen to speak.  Her passion for her books is one that is felt just by hearing her and her love of her family and it's diverse ways, is one that should be modeled.

I was told by numerous people that I would love this book.  And I have to say that the names took a bit to keep straight.  But once I did, what an amazing story this is.  I am eagerly awaiting the next installment this spring.

Renee has a way of bringing the palace and characters in this story to life that is not an easy feat, honestly.  Many strive to be able to describe an scene with such amazing details as she does, but they are not as successful as Renee.  She envelopes you in the sights and sounds of this fantastical land.

The struggle between the characters is real and is palpable.  They each have their own backstory that is ever so important to this main story and they all need to be told.  Their relationships are all complicated and yet at the root, are very sincere and simple.

I gave this one a 5 star rating.  I felt that it was that well written and well developed.  I felt that author brought you in for a ride throughout an amazing journey and left you wanting to continue on in the next book.  (Also, when a girl who gets car sick related to just the temperature brings this book with her on a trip downtown on the chance we may get stuck in traffic and she could read a few pages. that signals an excellent book!!)

Review: The Prophecy of Shadows

The Prophecy of Shadows The Prophecy of Shadows by Michelle Madow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I felt Nicole was kind of a boring character to be honest. I had hoped for more from her. Her obsession with Blake was a bit far-fetched in my opinion. And was not funny or anecdotal to the story at all. As a main character, she was less likable than the secondary characters in the book. And that to me made me like the book a little bit less. I felt that the plot was predictable most of the time and that the Greek aspect was enjoyable. I just wish you saw more of the actions of the characters rather than just told by the other characters about them. I am hoping that this series just continues to improve and we get to actually know the characters more and more. A four star effort for sure!!

Review: Forgotten Bodyguard

Forgotten Bodyguard Forgotten Bodyguard by Ali Parker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What an amazingly hot read while I was on vacation! Chloe and Ian - wow! I loved the realness to the characters and the relationship that they have. I love the way this was written (yes I am huge fan of the author!) And it truly is a hot little affair they have. Wow! I love how these characters have a lot of lot with some drama on the side that does not totally end them. Another 5 star Ali Parker book!

Review: Ceaseless

Ceaseless Ceaseless by Abbi Glines
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have to say that I was leery in this book. I mean honestly, it was well wrapped up and happy for me before with the freaking triangle. So I was concerned that this would be truly ridiculous. But with Pagan's memory wiped, I kind of enjoyed her getting to remember Dank all over again. I really did end up enjoying it.

Review: Find Me

Find Me Find Me by Michelle Mankin
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was frustrated by this as I felt it was disjointed. I was often frustrated by the characters and their lack of real feelings. And with no information about their pasts, the ending was confusing and beyond irritating. I will be hard pressed to complete this series based on the start.

“So Caden said you two met in an elevator,” the tattoo artist said to Makenna, amusement plain in his voice.
“We really did. We were trapped in it for over four hours,” Makenna said, smiling. It was a little weird to talk to someone she couldn’t look at, but she couldn’t move while he was working. “In my office building. I rode it just today.”
“That’s quite a way to meet someone,” Heath said with a chuckle. “How come nothing like that ever happens to me?”
“Maybe you don’t ride enough elevators,” Makenna said.
The tattoo machine pulled away from her skin. Heath laughed. “I guess I don’t,” he finally said, leaning back in.
The needles hit a sensitive spot along her spine that had Makenna grimacing. Originally, she’d been thinking of putting the piece on her shoulder, but when she’d decided on the bigger size, she thought it would look better in the center. Heath had warned her that the central placement meant inking over bone, which could hurt more, and it sure did.
Caden braced his elbows on his knees so he could lean closer. “Want to play twenty questions?” he asked.
She smiled, knowing he was trying to distract her and appreciating the heck out of the gesture. “Are there still questions left we haven’t asked each other?”
“Probably,” he said. “For example, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you your favorite sex position.”
“No laughing,” Heath said, as Makenna tried to hold back her humor. Heat filled her cheeks. “Also, TMI. However, I like TMI, so feel free to answer, Makenna.”
Since the needle was away from her skin, she did laugh that time. “Okay, so maybe there are questions we haven’t asked.” She winked at Caden as Heath got back to work. “And, to answer the question, the second part of the night on my floor.”
Caden’s gaze went molten. He flicked at the spider bite piercings with his tongue. And that had parts of her going molten, because she knew how freaking talented that tongue was.
“Yours?” she asked, arching an eyebrow.

Review: Built

Built Built by Jay Crownover
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love many of the Jay Crownover books. And this one is not different. I really liked this one. Zeb is a hot man - I mean, I do not normally go for that bearded man look. I love the tattoo look - I mean ask my handsome hubby. I just am not normally going for a bearded man. But in this case I could make an exception. He just is such an amazing warm, loving, fierce character that you feel like you are lucky to have been able to know him even if he is just a character in a book. Sayer is standoffish and guarded. But then again if I went through what she did, I probably would be too. She is definitely not your normal main female character but she comes around as best as she can. She truly loves Zeb and Hyde and that makes her overcome her obstacles. An all around great book and kick off to another great series from Jay Crownover. I cannot wait to see what the rest have in store for us. A definite 4 star rating!!!

Review: The Best Goodbye

The Best Goodbye The Best Goodbye by Abbi Glines
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been eagerly anticipating this addition to the Rosemary Beach series. River/Captain is one of those characters that was lurking in the background of other books that I really wanted to get to know. I wondered what the depth of his love and strength was and who it was rooted to. And I was not disappointed in the least with this installment.
His love for Addy/Rose is evident from the beginning and their attraction is palpable. (Side note - was reading this while awaiting my daughters at a recital rehearsal and a woman saw a page over my shoulder. She immediately needed to know what book I was reading so she could buy the book as well.)
I love how sweet the interactions are between Captain and Franny were too. What an emotional event and to handle that with the care and concern that it was is a good thing.
I would give this a 4 1/2 star out of 5 star. I rarely am disappointed in an Abbi Glines read and here is not exception. Overall hotness involved and true love conquering all. Left me feeling warm and mushy!

Review: Holding Her Hand

Holding Her Hand Holding Her Hand by Tammy Falkner
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I am all about a tattoo shop stories and to top it off it had to do with a deaf man and a girl with scars to cover (emotional and physical). This was an overwhelmingly emotional story. Not a long read and I felt it was a bit rushed. I would have liked a bit more depth to the characters and the story that was being told. I am giving this one a 3 star rating because it felt rushed. The connection would have felt a bit more realistic if it had not felt so rushed.

This was given to me by Netgalley to read in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My Review:
Is this an original idea for a story?  No.  But is it done well?  I think it is a good twist on this story.  I honestly enjoyed the characters and their stories.  I truly did.  A 3 star rating for these good characters and their story.

Review: Predestined

Predestined Predestined by Abbi Glines
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Please, I know, a 3 star rating for an Abbi Glines. I feel the guilt, really I do!! But I am frustrated with these characters. Leif drives me crazy. I want to slap him yet I also want to hug him. Ugh. But Dank. Well I perhaps I want to allow him to steal my soul just a bit. He is Death and I just find him yummy. And Pagan is more like me than I want to admit. But seriously, I guessed most of the book while reading it. Hence my frustration. But still it is an Abbi Glines so of course I approve and encourage all to read!

Review: Roommates

Roommates Roommates by Erin Leigh
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This one was an ok read. Not a great one but ok and a read if you enjoy New Adult books with explicit sex scenes. Now, I am all for a man who takes care of his needs as well as others. I was not a fan of him especially with his "signature move" as I thought it was vulgar and I would have slapped him. Just gross and uncalled for. There is no respect for others in my opinion. I thought he turned a leaf but not really sure he did. Disappointing.

He brushed a callused thumb on her cheek and smiled. “Go for a ride with me.”

“You’re crazy if you think I’m getting on that bike with you.” Hopping on the back of a bike with a drunk biker was plain dumb.

“Got an aversion to the guy taking the lead, sweetheart?” God, he was attractive. She found herself wanting him to kiss her. Hard. His hand curved casually around her neck as he angled his body closer and pulled her into him. “How about you hear me out first?” He winked, and the spell she was under deepened. “Then let’s talk about that kiss a little further.”

Apparently, besides tempting her beyond repair, this broad-chested guy was damn full of himself. “You seriously have one hell of a head on those shoulders. Listen, and listen closely, Cade. There will be no more kissing, touching, or spontaneous make-out sessions between us. Understand?”

His tense gaze fixed on her flushed face. The position of their bodies created a welcomed friction, and when she opened her mouth to speak, his fingers flew up to touch her lips, silencing her rebuttal. “Shush.” He leaned in slowly and pressed his mouth at her ear. “Some of the men in this club aren’t too fond of having a chick run the show.”

She had to laugh at his comment. “You think that’s news to me?”

“Explain then how a club president stays alive when her men are gunning to unseat her.”

“For sake of curiosity, who might we be talking about?” she asked, knowing it could be any Sinner, even Logan, vying to take her place at the head of the table.

Cade grunted. “Hammer.”

The accusation made sense. She’d known for a while Hammer’s discomfort with having a woman control the show but wasn’t aware that he spoke so openly about his annoyance to her holding the president patch.

She tried to scoot out from underneath his arms. “Thanks for the heads-up. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to leave and give you and your big ego some space.”

He curled a hand around her elbow and yanked her possessively up against his muscular chest, his lips pressed at her earlobe, and then he tugged on a bite. “Only a foolish man would let you just walk away.” Hot breath skated down the side of her cheek, and the proprietary way he held her body made her knees buckle under the pressure of his mouth on her skin. “And one thing I’m not, Em, is a fool…because only a foolish man wouldn’t fight for you.”

She let out an amusing laugh. “Kissing you is more trouble than it’s worth.”

“My memory is so much fonder.” Her head fell to the side, and he took it to his advantage, nipping and sucking on her neck. “You are worth all the trouble it’ll bring me to kiss you again. I need that kiss. I need you. Just you, Em.”

She licked her wet lips. “Something tells me this is going to be that kind of bad you mentioned being so damn good.”

Review: When You're Back

When You're Back When You're Back by Abbi Glines
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love Abbi Glines. I am sure you all are tired of hearing about my love of this author.

Where do I begin? Reese and Mase are one of those couples that you either really love and root for or you could care less about I suppose. Reese has had a pretty rough life leading up to her finding Mase and beginning this love affair that is a true love type relationship. He is all in with her - there is no one else who would ever fit into her shoes for him. Reese only has eyes for Mase and no man could ever compare for her. No matter who or what circumstances that are thrown at them, they are in it together and will find a way.

I really love this couple as they are very real to me. I keep finding more characters in this series that I love and therefore cannot wait to find the next one for me to read. A great book to start my year off with.

First Touch

When Emily Wayborn receives a voicemail from her former best friend and fellow party girl, Amber, Emily is immediately on edge. The message might sound benign to anyone else, but Amber uses a safe word that they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what's more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.  Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic Reeve Sallis, an hotelier known for his fiery temper.  Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But is Reeve friend or foe? And when they become lovers, will Emily be able to abandon her desire for Reeve in order to save Amber?

This one was a good book.  A 3-1/2 star worthy book.  I was not a huge Emily fan though, but it honestly was a really well written book.  I need to make sure people know though that this is a dark book - not my normal read for sure.  This is a very dark - BDSM - book.  I do not want people reading this book thinking that I have somehow changed my ways in my book choices.  I just was asked to read this and helped an author out.  I also am worried that with all I am reading, I will soon run out of things in my happy genres so I want to try to mix things up a bit.  With that said, I thank those that gave me this book as I am always appreciative when given a book to review.

“The harrowing scene when Reeve and Emily tentatively reveal what they each know about Amber brings a surprising moment of tenderness between the two damaged characters—and the cliffhanger ending sets up an even greater conflict for Book 2. Paige is unflinching in her depiction of a complicated relationship, and the results are explosive.” —Kirkus Reviews
“The dynamic between Reeve and Emily is interesting because their connection is so intimate despite the circumstances of their arrangement. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse that’s carnal, erotic and emotionally raw. Be prepared for a cliffhanger that will leave you desperate for more.” —RT Book Reviews
