Cross My Heart

MY REVIEW:

The plot twist in this has me a bit miffed.  I honestly was loving this book.  It did all the things a super champ of a book does for me - made me choose to read instead of clean up after dinner, ignore my children's numerous requests to watch tv or play on the tablet, want to ignore anything else in life that would prevent me from finishing the book NOW.  And then the twist happened and I was internally screaming at the characters that I hated them.  (Because if I keep doing it out loud, my family might think I have a legit problem.)
I liked how it was a girl needs to break out of her shell story via the hot, bad boy, but seriously was frustrated with the twist.  A bit unrealistic in my book and weird.  Made me leave the story on a bit of a "Huh?" which is never a good thing.  Or maybe it is since it has been 4 hours since I finished and I am still thinking about it.

I gave this one a 4 star rating since I am still thinking about it and babbling to my handsome man (I am sure he is loving that!)

No Better Man!

About NO BETTER MAN
A Daring Proposition
When it comes to business, Avery King always comes out on top. So after a very public breakup, work is the perfect excuse to flee the Windy City for the gentle breezes of Aspen, Colorado. Her mission: acquire the land of a rundown mountain ranch. Avery expects an easy win . . . until she meets the rugged and irresistible rancher who won't give up his property without a fight. Bryce Walker is stunned by the stubborn beauty determined to get what she wants. But what she wants is his last connection to the life he used to have. Bryce has plans to return the ranch to its former glory and no way will he sell his family home. Yet the more time he spends with Avery, the more her sweet touch makes him forget his painful memories. Now Bryce must decide whether living in the past is worth losing his future . . .

EXCERPT:

Ah, hell. Not this. What was it with women, anyway? Why’d they have this burning desire to get to the bottom of absolutely every feeling they had? Why couldn’t they sit in silence, enjoy the scenery? “I don’t know you well enough to be upset with you,” he finally said, increasing his pressure on the gas pedal. The cops were notorious for pulling over speeders on this section through town, but tonight he was willing to risk it.
“Look.” Avery’s hands sliced the air in front of her. “I understand why you don’t want to sell. Trust me. I get it.”
Ha. Trust her. He didn’t trust her any more than he trusted her father. At the end of the day, she worked for the infamous Edward King. She might be smokin’ hot and nice, and, like she insisted, a good person, but she still had a job to do. He wouldn’t forget that.
Instead of answering, he leaned over and flicked on the radio. Nothing like a little Brad Paisley to tune out a woman.
Avery shot him a fiery look, topaz eyes blazing, lips thinned into a warning that tempted him to test her.
That didn’t help things. She looked even better when she got mad. His grip on the wheel tightened until his knuckles ached. Mom was right. He had to get out more. Start dating again. Any woman besides Avery King…
She hunched forward and fiddled with the radio until he could hardly hear Paisley. Fine. That was fine. Five more minutes and they’d be back at the ranch anyway. He’d be free of her.
“You need to listen to me, Bryce. Please.” She launched into yet another impassioned monologue about how selling the ranch could change his life.
Yeah, well. He’d had enough changes in his life over the last few years. So sue him if he wasn’t interested. She didn’t seem to pick up on his lack of concentration, though. She went on and on until he pulled the truck into the driveway and parked in front of the office.
“Are you listening to me?” She leaned over the console between them and got in his face, close enough that he could smell oranges, that he could trace the sexy curve of her upper lip with his tongue if he’d wanted to.
“Have you heard anything I’ve said?”
The throb started again, deep in his chest, invading his body until it occupied all of him.
“Seriously, Bryce this is—”
Screw it. He cupped his hand around the back of her head and roughly brought her lips to his, totally unprepared for the impact it would have. Shock waves coursed through him, unleashing a craving stronger than he’d ever felt.
Avery squeaked in surprise but he didn’t let up. Need thundered through him and it was a helluva lot louder than the logic he’d spent the last several hours beating into his thick skull. Her lips were soft and moist and everything he’d hungered for during the last three lonely years. He gentled a hand up into her hair. It felt like silk against his skin.
A small moan purred in her throat and her upper body relaxed, lips melding to his in a pulsating heat. She ran her hands up his chest, and that was all he needed. He bent forward, halfway over the console, gathering her closer, kissing her harder, deeper. If it wasn’t for that console, he’d pull her right into his lap…
“Wow. Just…wow,” she whispered against his lips.
He answered by parting her lips with his tongue. There. That’d take care of her chatting problem.
Avery gasped a sharp intake of air, her chest rising against his.
Taking it as an invitation, he commanded her with his lips, opening and closing them in a sensual rhythm. A dull ache resounded in his chest. God, he’d forgotten the depth of a kiss…
He shifted to get a better angle, more access, but that console…
She pulled back with a small smile, lips grazing his in a tease, then she pressed in again and proved that she could make out as well as she could talk.
A scratching sound scraped the window. Moose whined, then barked.

Great timing, as usual.

MY REVIEW:

I liked this one. It has good chemistry and good character development.  I liked that there were roadblocks for them to overcome without it being overly dramatic. A very good quick read.

Rescuing the Bad Boy

About RESCUING THE BAD BOY
Not All Scars Heal
For Donovan Pate, the lake town of Evergreen Cove is a minefield of tough memories-including the day he had to let go of Sofie Martin. Years later he still can't forget the taste of her lips and the feel of her killer curves. He knows he's too damaged, that he should stay away for her own good. But what the head says and the heart wants are two very different things . . . Seven years ago, Donovan broke Sofie's heart. Now her career depends on playing nice in order to pull off the charity fund-raiser of the decade. She vows to keep things professional . . . yet working by his side every day doesn't make it easy to fight temptation, and it isn't long before she finds herself falling for this bad boy all over again. But loving Donovan means helping him face his past-so they can fight for a future together.

Excerpt:
Her soft touch landed on Donovan’s arm, and the anger shuddering inside him shifted into an ache. She stepped closer, the warmth between them radiating enough heat to set him on fire. But like the fireplaces he built, he could handle it. He could handle the heat from her, not because he was impervious, but because he was strong enough to soak her in and not burn to ash.
She turned his arm where paint was drying. She swiped at it with her sleeve. “I made a mess.”
He’d forgotten about the paint. “Don’t… I can… There is a shower in the…” He lost his train of thought when she turned those emerald green eyes up to him. He watched her delicate throat work as she swallowed. His eyes traveled up her neck and landed on her mouth. Needing her mouth, he lowered his face, watched her eyes grow dark and wide, watched her lift her chin to meet him.
Heat. He wanted more. If only to test his own strength.
He moved his lips gently against hers, but resisted holding her to him. She held onto him though, grasping his forearms with both hands, her fingers wrapped around his elbows. Pressing her body against his, pressing her tits against his ribs.
Hell, sounded like an invitation to him.  Deepening their connection, he thrust his tongue into her mouth, reached around, and grabbed her ass with both palms. When he squeezed, she sucked in a breath.
“Told you,” he rumbled.
“Told me?”
“Not a complaint, Scampi.” He squeezed again. “Perfect.”
A choked laugh left her throat. “Big.”
Still moving his hands over her backside, he said, “First thing I noticed about you at the Wharf.” He’d been plating up a chicken scaloppini when the manager walked in to show around a few new servers. Two he couldn’t remember, and Sofie. Bent over the plate, he’d peeked between the metal shelves framing that perfect ass . He’d stood to get a better look, and she’d pegged him with those moss-greens.
“Second thing I noticed was your eyes.”
Her lips parted slightly. “And the third thing?”
He kissed her. She tasted incredible. “The first time you talked to me.”
She rolled her eyes. “And what did I say?”
She didn’t think he remembered. She was wrong. “‘Can I get a side of cock?’”
Laughing, she shook her head.
He smiled back at her, unable to help himself. “Then you cleared your throat and said, ‘cocktail sauce’.”
Shaking her head, she said, “Worst abbreviation ever.”
“Kitchen guys are immature.”
She blinked up at him, studying him, like she was trying to piece him together. He didn't want her to. Once she pieced him together and had the whole picture, she wouldn’t like what she saw.
He kissed her again, keeping his hands on her body.
“Are you testing my boundaries?” she asked, her tone teasing. He recognized that comment from the night he rescued her from Torsett.
“Mine,” he corrected.
Sofie bit her lip. “I don’t date much.”
“Me either.” At all, actually.
She shook her head, more in thought than in argument. “I don’t think I have any boundaries with you.”
He was beginning to think he had none with her, either.

MY REVIEW:

I liked the book. The characters were good and well written. Nothing too terribly exciting for me but a good book. I gave this a 3 out of 5 star rating. I thought that this had a very predictable way about it.

About NOWHERE BUT HERE: An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both. Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down. No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.
Hand rider on handlebars, close-up

From Emily's Point of View. Set up: Emily is riding a motorcycle for the very first time and she's riding it with Oz.

THE MOTORCYCLE ACCELERATES AND THE FEW inches I had established between me and Oz: gone. My body slides forward, colliding into his, and we click together like two puzzle pieces. Heat rushes up my neck and onto my cheeks. My thighs are too close to his, too tight against his body and this is way more intimate than I have been before with a guy.
Even when the two of us kissed.
Oz veers left, away from Olivia’s, away from the main road, and the entire motorcycle pitches to the side. My heart thunders and my fingers clutch not only at Oz’s belt loop, but at the material of his jeans, and his hips.
Oz glances at me over his shoulder as the bike straightens out. “Lean with it, Emily.”
Right. Lean with Oz and the bike. Got it. The narrow road curves ahead and this time when Oz and the bike tilt, I move along with it. Oz releases one of the amazingly high handlebars and massages my knee before returning his hand to the grip. Whether in reassurance or to affirm I mastered the curve I don’t know, but either way, I sit higher.
The wind whips through my hair and onto my face and I shut my eyes for a brief second and pretend that I’m flying. There’s something energizing, something hypnotic, something inside me that begs to burst out of a cage in search of freedom.
The motorcycle kicks forward and our speed increases. Beams of sunlight filter through the towering trees and green foliage blurs together as we fly over the road. From head to toe, my body vibrates with the loud growling of the powerful machine.
My knee still tingles from where Oz laid his fingers on me and I’ve never been more aware of my hands in my life. I should let go of Oz’s body, but I can’t. Belt loops weren’t enough and my fingers have somehow edged up and onto his sides. Oz is solid. Yes, definitely solid. Every inch of him that I touch is tight muscle.
Oz is a year older than me, but somehow he seems older, wiser and hotter than any other guy I’ve known. Just the way he rides his bike creates this overabundance of confidence.
Warm sensations I’ve never experienced before blossom through me. We enter another curve and I lean with him. I like how in sync I’ve become with Oz and the motorcycle. Like we’ve merged into one.
The purr of the engine deepens and Oz eases the bike to a stop. His feet hit the ground and he turns the machine off. It’s as if all sound in the world ceased, or maybe I’ve gone deaf because there’s no way anything can be this still or silent.
The wind picks up and the silence is frightened away with the roar of the trees bending. Both Oz and I shift with the flow of air and Oz doesn’t move the bike until the breeze gentles.
Oz kicks down the stand and the bike tilts, but not too much. He sets a hand over the fingers that I laced together across his stomach. Oh, hell, I’m plastic wrapped to him. I drop my head onto his shoulder and it places me closer, and closer is not what I need.
I go to unglue myself, but Oz squeezes my fingers, sending a jolt of electricity up my arms. “You okay?”
I have to clear my throat to speak and that just sucks. “Yes.”
Oz slides his fingers against mine and a fluttering occurs in my stomach. It’s a light fluttering. Ticklish even, and my survival instincts scream at me to get off this motorcycle.

MY REVIEW:

I appreciated this one on many levels - mainly because it flowed so well and made a longer book seem like a short book.  I am not keen on all the biker settings I am seeing of late, but I definitely thought that it worked here.  The characters shine through this story.  You really get a feel for who they are and what they are about.  I really felt connected with them all.  I am looking forward to the next installment.

The Light (Stop what you are doing and read this!!)

Title: The Light, Equilibrium II
Series: Equilibrium
Author: Kate Thomas
Genre: Paranormal Romance - New Adult

With the truth of Ellie's place among the Balance Keepers finally coming to light, training now begins. She must learn to harness the powers that are growing within her, some spiraling out of control. Confusion and frustration become her constant companions, as her search for answers does nothing but push her further from the man she's come to love.

David is The Light, the speaker of truth, the whisperer of good in the world. His desire for more than he can have with his new apprentice tears at the fabric of his own stability, bit by bit. He knows what the future holds — and just how damning it will be for Ellie if she's not prepared to handle it — but he's forbidden to help.

As tragedy becomes reality, will she reach for The Light, or run into the soothing arms of The Darkness?

MY REVIEW:

After I completed The Core, I felt anxious and nervous. What would happen in book 2? What didn't happen in Book 2?!

The Light is another amazing 5 star book by Kate Thomas. It picks right up where the first book ends. Ellie returns to New York from L. A. where she was on a business trip with David. You get explore the relationship between David and Ellie more as well as Victor's relationship with Ellie and her relationship with her brother. There are a bunch of interactions between all the characters that twist and turn the stories.

Honestly, I have been a bit disappointed lately in the books I had been reading. Fairly predictable with plot lines that are consistently done over and over again.

I was so excited when I read The Core that I was kept on my toes. And then The Light is no slacker in that capacity. I was literally saying out loud "Wait?! Did that really just happen? It really said that?" Amazing.

And the fact that her family back story gets more twisty, edgy, and shocking is the best facet for me. It could have been a bit more cut and dry I suppose to avoid those feelings(BORING), but Kate Thomas handled this exactly as one would hope it would be handled.

So wrapping up - it was an amazingly fantastic book that deserves a 5 star rating. (I mean any book that takes me away from my daily household duties is basically a hero in life.) But one that does it without me even noticing is even better.

Image result for that is amazing gif

And a special shout out to Kate Thomas (AKA Laurie Starkey) as I was given this wonderful book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I truly did a happy dance upon receiving it.

I always like to try to figure out my author friends - especially ones that I love as much as this one.  And what better way then a couple of top ten lists?!

Top 10 favorite Authors (from my teenage years until now)

R.L. Stine “Fear Street Series”
L.J. Smith “Vampire Diaries”
Stephanie Myers “Twilight”
Richelle Mead “Vampire Academy”
Cassandra Clare “Mortal Instruments”
Cate Tiernan “Sweep Series”
Lauren Kate “Fallen Series”
J.R. Ward “Black Dagger Brotherhood”
Karen Marie Moning “Fever Series”
Becca Fitzpatrick “Hush, Hush Series”

And a list that is my fave of hers:

10 Things I'm Addicted to!

1. Hubby. The thing that I am most addicted to is definitely, by far my husband. He's ridiculously good looking, athletic, sensitive, loving, serving and puts up with me in ways no man should ever have to. He encourages me and lets me dream BIG all the time, quick to follow me anywhere and fast to remind me that I'm beautiful and loved. He's addictive in a million ways and I could list his name on all ten of these things, but that would make even me gag! :)

2. Coffee. I love coffee so crazy much that I've figured out lately how to have one cup of regular in the morning and then a few cups of 1/2 caf during the day and decaf at night. This schedule takes effort, but man is it worth it. I LOVE coffee, but not black. I need my International Delights Hazelnut creamer to go with it - like having a dessert. Starbucks is good and Seattle's Best is alright, but the things I can do with my Kurig? Lord have mercy.

3. PJ's. If I'm at home, I'm in my pjs. If you stop by on my day off, I'm in my pjs. If it's 3 in the afternoon, 10 in the morning or midnight and I'm at my house - you got it, in my pjs. Nothing says comfort and relaxation like getting into your pajamas as if you plan on staying awhile - a long while.

4. My Computer. I love to write and surf certain parts of the web. If I'm free I'll usually be typing away on some new projects, chatting with friends or tweeting until I have nothing more to say, which takes a looooooooooooong time.

5. Books. I love a physical book way more than I like my Nook. Don't get me wrong. The Nook is convenient, but I sure do love holding a book in my hand, putting notes in it or re-reading it and seeing the pages are worn from me reading it before. Nothing like snuggling down in the covers with a good - hold it in your hands - book!

6. Pizza. If I were on death row and they took an order for my last meal, it would be pizza and Mt. Dew for sure. I love pizza, the woodfired kind, but being in Texas that's a little rarer than one might expect. With that being the case, I'll take a thin crust supreme (no onions or peppers) from Pizza hut. LOVE IT. *is hungry now*

7. Vavoom Mousse. For some reason, this isn't popular anymore (whathappenedtothe90's?) My hair is kinky curly and I have to either put in mousse made from tire tar or use Vavoom. My sweet hubby (see addiction 1) has searched the city of Houston for this and finds it here and there, but mostly turns up empty. I walked into Ulta the other day and WHAT? It was there on the front display. I bought 10 of them and the girl looked at me like, "Who uses $150 of mousse?" Um me... I'm addicted.

8. Husband.

9. Hot guy I married.

10. Boy of my dreams that wears my ring.

EXCERPT:

She beamed, but it didn’t go all the way to her eyes like it normally would. There were lingering fingers of shadow along the edges that prickled his attention. “What?” “Does it feel different?” she asked. He hooked her hair with a finger and dragged them back behind her ear. “Does what feel different?” “Us,” she whispered. “I feel like it should feel different, but I feel the same.” He hummed quietly, knowing full well what she meant. “How do you want to feel?” “Like this,” she said immediately, eyes growing urgent. “I love the way I feel when I’m with you. I don’t ever want that to change. But I have been so scared for so long that I just … I wasn’t expecting to feel exactly how I always felt.” He let his fingers ghost along the elegant curve of her brow, down the lines of her face to the hollow of her cheek. He watched as her eyes closed and her head tilted into the touch. “How have you always felt?” he wondered, his voice constricting with the band that had tightened around his chest at the simple gesture. “Loved.” Her eyes opened and met his. “Wanted, happy, excited. A little sad.” He felt his muscles stiffen at the confession. “Why sad?” “Because I know one lifetime with you won’t be enough and it kills me.” Her eyes bore into his, reflecting the fear she spoke of. “I can’t lose you, Damon. I’d never survive.” He kissed her gently on the mouth with one hand lifting up to cup the back of her head. He pulled back a second later before caution could be thrown to the winds and he started something he would be powerless to stop. “You will never lose me,” he promised. “I won’t ever let that happen.” Teaser 3 Twitter Banner 1

MY REVIEW:

Ok, so let me say I am definitely going to need to read the rest of this series pretty freaking quick if this is any indication as to how this author writes!!  I loved these characters!!  Yes, I know that is a lot of exclamation points but seriously, this one wowed me.  Now, perhaps I do not love it as much as others I have seen because I did take off a star.  WHY?!  I am sure people will be disappointed in me, but the drama was pretty cliché in my opinion and therefore not 5 star worthy for me.  A definite 4 star rating with no question or concern.  I suggest all read this as soon as they can if they want a new book boyfriend to fall completely in love with.  And what a better time to be releasing this book - in time for beach reading season!!!
