Review: Forever with You

Forever with You Forever with You by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

We all know how much I love Jennifer Armentrout. I mean I really love her writing. It usually about romance and happiness in my thoughts. But today she totally got me. I actually cried while reading today. & I couldn't put it down once I started. Once again her characters (Steph and Nick this time) are well developed and wonderful. I always love how she incorporates all of the characters from previous books in the series and are her current writing. But this particular book spoke to me. The closed office at the beginning of the relationship but this particular book spoke to me. The closed offness at the beginning of the relationship and then how quickly they got so very close and how they don't was every little situation that popped up. I cannot recommend this book more to people. Another wonderful Jennifer Armentrout book for me to reread.

Review: The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Ok, so my new fb book club read this one as our first pick. I had high hopes. Totally disappointed. I was bored with the writing and felt it was scattered. I guessed the bad guy right away and wanted to slap the ladies of this book for not being able to see what was going on because it was so apparent. I felt that this could have been done in many different ways, yet the way it was written, frustrated me beyond my comprehension. I am generously giving this a 3 star as I really was disappointed in this book.

SEBASTIAN held the phone to his ear. “I’m just about to take off my clothes,” Aileen’s voice cooed over the line. “Do you know what I have on underneath, Bash? Absolutely nothing. I’ve been a bad, bad girl this year, baby. I’m positive I made the naughty list.” He leaned back in his bed, sliding a hand down his stomach. He was already in a heated state of arousal. It was Christmas Eve, and he was spending it alone, having phone sex with his girlfriend. “You should be here to see what being bad gets you,” he murmured invitingly. Her breathless laugh had him hard already. He toyed with the fly of his jeans and closed his eyes, thinking about the last time this woman made love to him. He pictured her ample breasts spilling into his face as he palmed her sexy curves, and already it was torture. With her honey blonde hair and pinup body, Aileen reminded him of a lingerie model—she was his very own personal Scarlet Johansson. Sebastian had met her at a charity function about eight months before, and she was just about the only woman who was willing to deal with his demanding job as a firefighter at the Tucson Fire Department. “If I was there, what would you do to me?” she asked. His manhood swelled even more, just from her seductive tone. He liked to think they had more than a sexual thing going on. The only problem was, Aileen had already told him she wasn’t looking for a serious relationship. “You already know, Aileen. I’d light some fires…” He paused, thinking, phone sex? It was like being in high school all over again. Back then, he was a pimply, gangly teen trying to figure out if the G-spot really existed. He laughed softly to himself. He we sure that by now, at twenty-six years old, he’d have someone to make love to every night, instead of getting blue balls. “Enough talk, honey,” he said. “How about you clock out early?” “You know I can’t leave work,” she answered. He strained to hear what was going on in the background at her job. It was disappointing that she had to work for the holidays. She was usually off nights. He began to wonder if she was just blowing him off. Lately, he was feeling more attached to her. He missed her when she didn’t call, or when he tried phoning and it would go to voicemail. He disliked that she was rarely free to go out. He sat up and swung his feet over the edge of the bed. It was time to tell her how he felt. He was about to stop her, when he heard a man’s voice in the background. It wasn’t clear what the man was saying, but it sounded intimate. “Your boss stepped in?” he asked curiously. “Hang on, um, Barbara,” she said, and in a voice that was nothing like the sexy purr she had been using before. “Barbara?” he repeated, confused. The sound became muffled. He could tell Aileen had put her hand over the phone receiver. He never saw himself as naturally cynical. He was lighthearted for the most part. But, when a woman suddenly called out the wrong name in the middle of a conversation—particularly a female name—alarms went off. He gritted his teeth and stood up, trying not to read too much into it. “Who’s Barbara?” he asked. “Look, let me call you back.” Aileen sounded irritated, but Sabastian wasn’t ready to hang up the phone until he got some answers. “Aileen, is there something I need to know?” “Barb, seriously, let me call you back. My, uh…” Suddenly the guy in the background grabbed the phone and replied jovially, “Hey, Barb. Yep, her husband’s home, honey. She’ll have to call you back.” Okay. That said it all. Sebastian hung up the phone. Aileen is married? Fuck. I was played.

Once I move out of the city, I would love to have a Shih Tzu and 2 cats as pets and practice kids. I love writing action-packed, steamy romance stories about new adults and characters in their mid-twenties, sometimes from wealthy families. I love my female characters to be strong, and my men stronger, with a vulnerable, sometimes broody side. I love to laugh. I think it should be a law to laugh every day. My Review:
This book was very scattered in it's presentation to me.  I was not thrilled with this book.  As I continued, it became ok.  But it was too chaotic in it's thoughts and I became frustrated more than I became in love with the story honestly.  A shaky 3 star review from me (more of a 2-1/2 star honestly).

The Fix

One conversation is all it takes to break a world wide open.

Seventeen-year-old Macy Lyons has been through something no one should ever have to experience. And she’s dealt with it entirely alone.

On the outside, she’s got it pretty good. Her family’s well-off, she’s dating the cute boy next door, she has plenty of friends, and although she long ago wrote her mother off as a superficial gym rat, she’s thankful to have allies in her loving, laid-back dad and her younger brother.

But a conversation with a boy at a party one night shakes Macy out of the carefully maintained complacency that has defined her life so far. The boy is Sebastian Ruiz, a recovering addict who recognizes that Macy is hardened by dark secrets. And as Macy falls for Sebastian, she realizes that, while revealing her secret could ruin her seemingly perfect family, keeping silent might just destroy her.

The Fix follows two good-hearted teenagers coming to terms with the cards they were dealt. It’s also about the fixes we rely on to cope with our most shameful secrets and the hope and fear that comes with meeting someone who challenges us to come clean.

I have a hard time when it comes to someone who cheats - whether it is honest to goodness physical cheating or mental or emotional.  I have always believed cheating is cheating and it is bad so it turns me off of books.  Ask my husband - I rant about it all the time.  But that aside, I really liked this book.  It brought together that compounded by her past and what happens when kids grow up and explore who they really are.  I felt Macy was hard to understand but felt it was because she honestly had a hard time understanding herself.  And when she met Sebastian, she started to realize that who she was and what her life was were perhaps not what she always knew them to be.  I would give this one a 4-1/2 star rating as I overall really did like the message it sends and what it dealt with.

A Stepbrother Novel
Jen McLaughlin
Releasing Sept 15th, 2015

In this explosive novel from bestselling author Jen McLaughlin, a good girl falls for the ultimate bad boy: her stepbrother. Perfect for fans of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, Bad Romance proves that passion can be so wrong it’s right.

Seven years in the army will change a guy. But after a shoulder wound ends his career as a sniper, Jackson Worthington finds himself back home, fighting a battle that’s all too familiar: keeping his hands off Lily Hastings. She’s still her rich daddy’s little angel, innocent, impossibly lovely, as squeaky-clean as Jackson is dirty. And she’s still his stepsister—forbidden but not forgotten, not after the soul-melting kiss that got him kicked out of the house at eighteen. He couldn’t resist her then. How the hell can he resist her now?

Lily is about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and commit to a high-stress job she hates, all to please the father who controls every waking moment of her life. On top of everything, her teenage crush is back, with a sleek, chiseled body and a trace of the rebellious boy whose lips sealed her fate. Jackson’s timing couldn’t be worse . . . or better. Because Lily’s all grown up, too. She’s aching for another taste. And for the first time, she’s ready to be a bad girl.

I liked this story.  I felt that there was a lot of turmoil and drama that arose for their decisions and desires.  I also understand the thought process of are they really step-siblings if they were never really around each other and in their teens when their respective parents decided to get married.  I liked how it was explored that their decisions affected others but was ultimately about their happiness.  Well written and well done.  And did I mention it was HOT?!

drowning to breathe

The danger in pretending is it becoming real...

Sebastian Stone, Sunder front man and guitarist with a rap sheet about ten miles long, escaped to Savannah, Georgia, to get away from the trouble he’d caused.
Not find more of it.
The moment he saw Shea Bentley, he saw beneath all her sweet and innocence to something that went deeper.
Their relationship was built on secrets; their love built on lies.
Sebastian never imagined how deep her secrets went.
When the past and present collide, Sebastian and Shea find themselves fighting for a future neither believed they deserved. Their passion is consuming and their need unending.
Now, holding the truth in his hands, Sebastian is faced with sacrificing everything he’s come to love to protect Shea and his family.

Two pasts intertwined.
Two lives bound.

Will their demons drown them or will Shea and Sebastian finally learn to breathe?

Drowning to Breathe
A Bleeding Stars Novel, Book 2

My brow pinched, because this fucking hurt. Hurt that Shea had been resisting confiding in me because of who I was. A fucking loose cannon. Someone prone to violence. And there it was, right beneath the surface, fire flaming and licking and begging for release.
My voice was tight. “Made you a promise I’d protect you, Shea. Live for you. And that’s exactly what I’m gonna do. You and Kallie? You’re my life. My everything. And I will do anything…give up anything…to make sure you two are together. I won’t let him win.”
She brushed the back of her hand over the wetness on her cheeks. “He will do anything to break us apart…to separate us. He knows we’re weaker alone. All his words about taking us down at the same time?”
Her head shook with bitterness and hate, something so foreign on my girl’s face, but I saw it there—the atrocities he’d committed—the things she still kept inside.
The scars she wore on her heart while I wore mine on my skin.
“It’s a tactic. A ploy. He thinks he can fill us with threats. Convince our subconscious into believing together we’re easy targets. But, no.” Her eyes drew together as she refuted the idea, as she spilled her own belief. “He’s a coward. A coward. Someone who allows others to carry out his crimes and then lords it over them as if he is the one exerting control.”
That brave chin quivered. “I gave him my submission for so long, and I refuse to ever be that girl again. I was her, Sebastian. I was weak.”
Strength filled the profession. “But I’m not weak anymore. And I’m even stronger with you by my side.”
“Promise me you won’t let him provoke you, Sebastian. He knows exactly how to ruin people. He finds their weaknesses. He knows Kallie is mine. And he knows the two of us are yours.”
I swallowed hard. “I promise, baby.”
I promise.

He wanted nothing at all…

Until he found she had everything to give…

Sunder lead singer and guitarist Sebastian Stone has everything—fans, fame, and fortune. He also has a heart full of bitterness and a reputation for a short-fused temper. But an outward reputation rarely reveals the true man inside. Facing assault charges after trying to protect his younger brother, Sebastian is sent to Savannah, Georgia to lie low until the dust settles in L.A.

Shea Bentley is beautiful, kind, and hiding from the very lifestyle Sebastian has always embraced.

When the mysterious, tattooed stranger begins hanging out at the bar where she works, Shea is quick to recognize he is nothing but trouble, but she's helpless to the way her body lights up every time his intense gray eyes tangle with hers.

They both soon find themselves drowning in a sea of desire and passion that won’t let them up for air.

Sebastian knows firsthand secrets never die, and he’s not the only one who’s hiding them.

Loving someone always comes with a price. But will it be Shea’s past that costs them everything?

Is staying with one guy worth being separated from family and friends forever?  That’s the decision Rose Gluck has to make.

Raised in a strict Jehovah’s Witness congregation in rural Missouri where romance is a four-letter word and life is charted from childhood, Rose’s prospects as the future wife of Clinton Greer, the boorish son of the authoritarian congregation overseer, do not seem especially bright.
However, when Wyatt True joins their congregation, a possibility of a new relationship emerges, along with new trials. Through their growing friendship, Rose begins to understand the deeper truths of love. Meanwhile, Rose’s grandmother worries that she is being led down the same road that caused Rose’s mother to be lost.

But are true love and happiness worth exiting what she always considered true religion? After all, her choice has eternal consequences—in the most final sense of the word.

My review:

I am always a bit hesitant when reading books so very religious in nature.  And whereas it was full of religion and the ways of the congregation, it could actually be applied to many organizations honestly.  The author was able to tell us a tale of a very young, naïve girl that needed to be become a grown up and realize the path of her own heart.  It was full of amazing characters and a tale that was wonderfully written.  I really enjoyed this story immensely.  A true 4-1/2 star gem for me!!

Why Ride Motorcycles

Ha! I’m always baffled by this one. Riding is amazing. In four decades of life in which I’ve been on bikes, I’ve only ridden Harleys or Triumphs, so my answer is specific to those, not the other sort! The scenes where my characters are on a bike (which are in not only Undaunted and Unruly, but also in Graveminder and in my self-published book Unfiltered & Unlawful) are based on my own feelings.

There’s a freedom, an adrenaline rush, and a sliver of danger at being on a machine with that sort of speed and no real protection if you crash. There’s a connection between riders and machine that is greater than in a car (even a stick shift, which is what I prefer in cars).  There’s a connection between driver and passenger on a bike.  It’s like an intricate dance at times, but you are partnering with a man, a machine, and a road which hides threats.  It’s one of the things I love most.  (And, yes, there is a Harley in my garage.)

You’re safe, Red,” he said in a softer voice. “I’ll take you to grandmother’s house.”

He watched me, obviously waiting for something.

The best my drunken brain could offer was, “The Big Bad wolf eats Red.”

He paused, grinned, and patted the seat. “You’re too drunk for that too.”

I blinked at him. Then his words sunk in, and I gasped. I hadn’t meant that, but now that he planted the idea in my mind, I couldn’t speak.

“You’re safe with me,” he promised, and then he patted the tiny seat behind him.

I wanted to tell him that I didn’t want to be safe, not after he’d planted such forbidden images in my mind. I yanked my mind out of the gutter and climbed onto the motorcycle, wrapped my arms around his waist, and tried not to shiver. I shouldn’t like the way he talked, but I did. I liked the whole package: the rescue, the insinuations, the motorcycle.

Maybe alcohol and fumbled petting with Quincy just skewed my judgment so severely that Zion seemed more tempting than he actually was. I wasn’t sure. I also didn’t think it mattered. By tomorrow, I would be too sober to think about kisses or any of the other things he might be good at doing.

He pulled my arms tighter around him, holding my hands together on his very taut stomach. It was a little embarrassing that being on the back of his Harley was doing far more for my libido than all of Quincy’s—and every other man’s before him—effort.

“Hold on, Red.”

I absolutely loved this one.  Perhaps I am becoming more of a biker girl than I had imagined.  It was sexy and fun and HOT!!  Loved the characters!  Zion knew he was not as good for her as she deserved in his mind yet the pull between them was amazing.  Just a fun, good read!  A definite 4 star review from me.  Not as predictable as many books have been for me lately and I enjoyed that!

Ronnie Douglas talks about music and writing
Music is how I get into any mood. Writing romance is part of writing most of my books, so I have a few years of trying out different strategies. Often, though, I just turn on my music and let go.  I don’t need a special room. In fact, for the sequel to Undaunted, I wrote the sexiest scene in the book while I was at a layover in Iceland.  It made me giggle out loud at one point to realize that I was in a lounge with all these businessmen in their suits, and I was curled up in a chair sipping my tea and writing a sex scene.
My default was Lana Del Rey, but I use music to tweak my moods, so depending on what mood I needed, I’d swap out to a specific song and just play that song on repeat for the emotion I needed to call up.  A few of the ones I used were:
a.      Beyoncé “Crazy in Love”
b.      Rihanna “Pour it Up”
c.       Rihanna “Rude boy”
d.      Missy Elliot “Get Ur Freak on”
e.      Leon Else “Cheap Hotel”
f.        Train “Bruises”
g.      Charlie Worsham “How I Learned to Pray”
