Alex didn’t want to die, but he just couldn’t take it anymore. Dwight’s pills seemed to promise escape… and escape is exactly what he gets. He ends up in a world reminiscent of his childhood Wonderland, but nothing is as it was in Alice’s day. The Outerlands are a twisted version of his favorite story, with strange characters and unnatural dangers. Before he can get used to his new home, it’s threatened by an outside force. Will Alex ever find a place where he feels safe?

Excerpt fun:

A knot had reformed in his chest. White hot; full of fear, despair, frustration, and rage. Nothing about his life was fair. If he stayed passive, he was tortured. If he fought back, he was punished. No one else felt the way he did. No one else could because no one else had the horrible life he did. He couldn’t talk to anyone about it. Not his parents. Not his friends. Certainly not the Principal. He was alone. Utterly alone.

A sob, primal and full of darkness, ripped itself from his throat and filled the room. He sat down at one of the desks with a bang. Pain shot through his buttock and he lifted off the seat, reaching back into his pocket. He had forgotten about the canister. He pulled it out now, examining the contents with vision blurred by hot, salty tears. There was a paper attached to the outside, but it was half ripped. The only thing he could make out was part of the doctor’s name (Ink-something) and a few letters in the middle of the medication name (me). Laughter bubbled up as he read it together: Dr. Ink me. Dwight had a strange sense of humor. Hiccoughing with a mixture of tears and laughter, he decided he would follow these strange instructions and he twisted off the top of the container. Inside were a bunch of white pills.

They seemed so innocuous, piled up together. This was his salvation; his only option. He barely took a moment to consider anything further except that here, in his hand, was an escape from his pain. From his life. The thought actually excited him. He didn’t want to just be numb. He didn’t want to be high. He wanted to be done. They would have to find someone else to kick around. Someone else to destroy. He wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore. Alexander Carroll Lewis would be free.

He brought the canister up to his lips, took a breath, then tipped the contents into his mouth. The pills were hard and chalky and they left his tongue feeling gross. He took a water bottle from his bag and uncapped it. Taking a huge swig, he felt the pills lift from his tongue and enter the liquid, moving around together.

He swallowed.

My review:

First off let me say that I do not support the use of random pills that you have clue on.  So now that my nurse-side can chill, let me also say that I liked this book.  I liken it to Alice in Wonderland but more chaotic and crazy and messed up.  He needed to fight a lot to be able to survive - much like anyone's life honestly.  I really feel that some will connect with this version of a classic story we all love.  I mean, I have an Alice poster on my wall for crying out loud.  Overall, I would give this one a solid 3 star rating.

When You Leave

Cass is positive that the people she cares about most will eventually leave her. Her father is gone, her mother doesn’t notice Cass exists, and her best friend’s battle with cancer was too close of a call. So when she begins her year at a wealthy new private school, Cass’s plan is to suffer through it in anonymity.

However, when her cute locker neighbor, Cooper, shows an undeniable attraction toward Cass, keeping him at a safe distance isn’t easy. Even though her Frogtown skater world and his do-gooder preppy one are so different, Cass and Cooper somehow mesh. And once Cass lets her guard down, Cooper is mysteriously murdered—thus proving her original theory.

When Cass’s close friend is suspected as the killer, she isn’t sure who she can trust anymore. Between investigating Cooper’s murder and trying to understand what she really meant to him, will Cass even find what she is looking for?

Monica Ropal’s tension-filled and emotionally-charged YA debut explores the issues of an outsider looking in, and her desperation to find the impossible answers. Why do people leave? And who will be next?

My Review:
AMAZING!!!!  I really loved this story.  The love story between Cass and Cooper was fun to read about - skater girl and preppy boy finding common ground and a love that fit them as a couple.  And then he dies!!!!!  And she decides to try to figure it all out - even trying to solve the murder herself basically.  She needed to follow through on that quest as it was something she needed for closure.  Just an amazingly written story too.  It definitely kept my interest until the end.  It was not just a mystery - it was a romance, mystery, coming of age story that many could wrap their heads and hearts around.  I loved Cass' struggle and felt it to be very real.  She had her home struggles (mom, sibling, etc) and she had her school struggles (be who I am or who I am suppose to be).  Just brillant!!  A definite 5 out of 5 star rating on this one!

Devil's Moon - Release Party!!!

The last place Sir David "Devil" Ormiston expected his moonlight chase of a horse thief to end was in a lady's bedchamber. He is shocked to find that the raider he has pursued is no man, but a defiant beauty in disguise-and the woman he's vowed to protect at all costs. Face to face with a girl Dev thought he knew, the ever confident, marriage-resistant knight may learn that he is defenseless against the desirable woman she has become.

Lady Robina Gledstanes will do anything to keep her family's land out of the hands of her greedy kinsmen-except willingly submit to the handsome, cocksure Devil Ormiston. Dev's help may be just as dangerous as the threats lurking outside her castle. But when enemies scheme to steal the castle's treasure, Robina must risk losing something even more precious-her heart.

My Review:

I have rarely been disappointed by an Amanda Scott book. And this is no exception. I really like her heroine's and their strength of character. Her writing is always above the standard and so wonderful to read. And here is a romp through Scotland. (Honestly, reading this before Outlander comes back next week has we wanting more Scotland in my every day life for sure!) Over all for the characters and their story and the wonderful writing I give this a very strong 4 star rating.

Watching Dev, Robina was grateful for his restraint. They reached the graveyard soon afterward and dismounted to look at the grave. She sensed Rab’s presence strongly as they stood there, but he kept silent, too.

“What is it, Robby? Art sad again?”

Startled, she said, “Not sad, just pensive.”

“I think you have been pensive since I arrived, or longer,” he said. “Keeping secrets, or thinking about Rab?”

Uncertain how to reply, since the truth was unacceptable, she realized that silence was just as bad. Dev would surely suspect that she was keeping something from him.

She would have liked to tell him about the jar of coins, but Rab’s warning was sensible. And, in truth, whether Dev was currently master of Coklaw or not, the money belonged to Benjy, not to Dev.

The thought was disheartening, and she wished Rab would recall that he had trusted Dev. Confiding in him should be not only safe but sensible.

Rab, however, remained as silent as his grave.

“We should head back down,” she said with a sigh.

“Keeping secrets then,” Dev said grimly. “Don’t you trust me?”

“Oh, Dev, no, don’t think that,” she said, putting a hand to his arm, shocked that he had so nearly guessed her thoughts. “I know I’ve been a bit difficult, but—” Breaking off when he grinned, she said bluntly, “Do you think that was funny?”

He shook his head and bit his lower lip.

“Damnation, David Ormiston, do you dare to laugh at me now?”

“Nay, nay, I’m striving mightily not to laugh or to say what I’m thinking.”

“Just what were you thinking?”

“That when you refuse to tell me what you are thinking and then say that I’m mistaken to suspect a lack of trust, you make me want to kiss you one minute and put you over my knee the next. But, by heaven, if you swear at me again, I’ll—”

“I won’t swear,” she said hastily. “But neither will I tell you all I think. Some things are still private, sir, one’s thoughts especially so. But if you want to kiss me again,” she added, feeling suddenly and strangely shy but determined, “you may.”

“May I?” He raised his eyebrows. “I will admit that I enjoyed your kiss when we were here before. But others would say that I’d taken advantage of you.”

“They would be wrong,” Robina said. “I kissed you first. I wanted to know how it would feel, and now I want to know if it feels the same way whenever one kisses a man. I do trust you with my virtue, Dev.”

“Do you, Robby? You should not be so trusting. Sithee, I’m not certain I can trust myself. You’re a mighty tempting wench. But there are rules.”

“Bother the rules,” she said. “Do you not want to kiss me?”

“Aye, sure, I do,” he responded, pulling her roughly into his arms.

Uncertain now, but curious, she looked up and tried to gauge his mood. But he allowed her no time for that before his lips claimed hers, hot and demanding.

As he held her close, she heard him moan quietly in his throat.

Dev heard his moan, too, and realized that she had bewitched him. He wanted her in every way—other than marriage, of course, he reminded himself brutally. He suspected, though, that her invitation had just been an attempt to avoid answering his question about the secrets she was keeping from him.

The pliskie lass needed a lesson, and he needed release for his own emotions or whatever it was that enflamed his body, if only to show her the dangers of tormenting men … one man, at least.

Thrusting his tongue into her mouth and finding it hot inside and yet softly yielding, he pressed his lower body tightly against hers, letting her feel his desire.

She was too short, but a flat-topped boulder sat nearby. Without warning or sign, he lifted her to stand on it and did so without releasing her mouth.

For once in her life, she did not fight him but wrapped her arms around him and held him as tightly as he held her.

The Legend of the Light Keeper - Book 1

After a hurricane destroys her home, Lily Jordan is ready for life to get
back to normal. That would be easy if her mother's recent engagement hadn't
landed her in a house along Southeast Texas' most haunted ghost road.

The secluded scenic road is steeped in rich history and legends, but when
Lily is given an old diary on her birthday, will she find that those legends
hold more for her future than she's bargained for?

With the help of new friends, Hunter and Owen, and forbidden love, Talon,
will she uncover dark secrets from the past and find the key to her own
gifts? Is it fate or circumstance that brought her to her new home?

Normal gives way to the paranormal in book one of the Light Keeper series
where mystery and suspense will keep you guessing until the very last page.

My Review:
I liked this one a lot based on the paranormal aspect of the story.  But the whole, hooking up with my step-brother-to-be is a deal breaker for me.  I lose a lot of the respect for the characters when that happens.  I also, HATE when the parents are not involved in their kids lives because they are wrapped up inside of themselves.  And that is a major issue here.  Since her mom is engaged and dealing with that, she has little time or interest in dealing with her 16 year old.  Umm, I get that you work lady, but still, figure out what your kids are doing each day and that includes trying to hook up with your future stepson!
But I digress.  I loved the supernatural element of the light and the shadow and how it impacted Lily.  (Which is a great name by the way!)  And the connection she immediately felt with Granny made it all the more amazing.  (As someone who just met the other half to my family and knowing how immediately I was attached to them, I totally get this!)
Unfortunately though, due to the incest-like love affair and the non-involved parents, I can only give this a 3 star rating.  I really liked the amazing details and such for the paranormal experiences, it just irritated me a bit more than I can handle.

My Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Movies:

You know those movies, the ones that you’ve seen so many times that you know all the lines, can act out every scene, and that you’re secretly obsessed with and ashamed to admit it. You play them over and over and watch them every time they come on TV. Yeah, we all have them, and while some might even be good movies for their time, the amount of exposure you’ve inflicted on yourself is quite unhealthy. Well, this is a list of mine. Let’s see how many we share.

10. Ever After - (1998) This one makes me laugh. I can’t help myself.

9. Matilda- (1996) Miss Trunchbull and the chokey! Need I say more?

8. She’s All That- (1999) Loved Paul Walker’s jerk-faced character! He was beautiful.

7. 10 things I hate About You- (1999) Heath Ledger’s hair always bothered me in this, yet, I watch.

6. A Knight’s Tale- (2001) Heath’s hair was better in this and I love the music.

5. Twilight- (2008) I just can’t help myself. If it’s on, I’m probably watching.

4. Cry Baby- (1990) Hatchet-Face intrigues me. I can’t stop staring.

3. Hair Spray-(1988) Let’s face it, I confuse this one with Cry Baby all the time.

2. Donnie Darko-(2001) I’m always creeped out by Frank the Rabbit.

1. Mean Girls-(2004) I could quote this one all day! You either love this one or hate it. I love it!

That’s my list. It was hard to cull that one down to just ten!

A special THANK YOU to Kelly Hall for giving me this awesome list to include.  Something a bit more fun than just the synopsis and review - am I right?

Shifters In Love! ( a little outside my norm of late)

Another Advanced Copy that I received!!!  I have turned into a very lucky girl.  I am reading a variety of types of books lately and this broke up my YA and New Adult monotony of late.
This type of story is not for everyone for sure but sometimes stretching your mind, is kind of nice
Spring Fever: Shifters in Love (A Paranormal Romance Box Set)Synoposis:
Match Made in Hell (A BBW paranormal romance) by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Milly Taiden
When quiet Laura Nieves is tossed together with hot as hell warrior Damien Wrath, eternity heats up really fast. Add in the fact they’re living in hell with a crazy mistress, things go from hot to explosive. Their basic urges will take over, or they’ll kill each other.

Review:  This is the winner for my fave story in this book.  I loved the characters and the romance in this one had me blown away.  And the setting was a more unique setting with its own set of characteristics.

An Unexpected Diversion by Vella Day
Cheyenne Snow has been given an ultimatum by her father—the pack’s Alpha—find a shifter husband soon, or she’ll be forced to marry. Understanding that the odds of her meeting the deadline are slim, Chey decides to go out with a bang and find a human diversion.

Review:  A very interesting story.  I actually found myself very eager to see where this story was going to go.  I really liked her writing style as well.

Waking the Bear by Kerry Adrienne
Overprotective bear shifter, Griff Martin, reluctantly rents his mountain cabin to an artist, Amy Francis. He quickly realizes the plucky artist is his mate. But danger is brewing in the forest, and Griff has to be ready to safeguard both his female and his den, at the risk of losing both.

Review:  I was a little weirded out by the park ranger being a shifter. I suppose that should make sense and on one hand to me it does.  But still it was a spin I was not very sure of.  I did though like the story and enjoyed what was going on with the characters.

Prime Desire by Andie Devaux
Nicolas can’t stop thinking about the woman whose life he saved, and Evie has never forgotten the were tiger who rescued her from certain death. When apparent serendipity brings them together again, Nicolas is faced with controlling his inner tiger around the woman he desires above all others. But will Evie be able to overcome her fear of his nature to give them a second chance at love?

This one was my least favorite of the stories.  I did not like the characters nor did I like the plot line.  I was very put off by all the deceit I felt in this book.

Bear Essentials (A BBW paranormal romance) by Lia Davis
When bear-shifter Trey meets the curvy, raven-haired goddess, Nichole, he realizes exactly what he wants and knows she’s worth any amount of trouble. All he has to do is seduce all of her insecurities away and claim her as his bonded mate.

Review:  I thought this was a quick to the point type of story.  Not an awesome one but still a good quick read.  The characters in my opinion are just ok.

Boundless Fate - Release Day!!

Boundless Fate Synopsis:
Colton Kingston’s livelihood has been reduced to a pile of black ashes by a tragic act of arson. After sending away the woman he’s loved since the tender age of five, a dark hateful revenge threatens to overtake his heart. Colton knows pushing her away is the only way he can keep her safe.

Paige Summer’s has endured her fair share of obstacles in the past, and refuses to give up on Colton and the life they share together. As interferences try to tear them apart, Paige is determined to stand by Colton’s side and remind him of their love and its strength.

But at every turn, tragedy continues to strike and more devastation falls upon them.

Will Colton and Paige’s love be boundless? Or will revenge conquer their fate?

My Review:

I liked this story a lot.  It had a lot of suspense and drama.  But more than anything, it had love!!  And what a duo Paige and Colton are?!?!  Whereas I know that their love is the kind that many dream of, as they grow, I can't help but wonder if it will be enough.  I mean, let's face it, they have gone through the ringer here.

I am curious to see where this story goes because as they continue to move forward, I am not sure if they will be able to overcome these obstacles and achieve that Happily Ever After that they deserve.  I mean look at their histories here.  They deserve that happiness.

Usually, I am confused when an author chooses to write from one point of view and then switches, but not here.  Alicia is able to switch seemingly flawlessly and makes it so easy and good to read.  I really enjoy her writing style.

The second installment in the Only series. Must read book one first!!

First loves never die but Grayson Ford comes close. Bleeding out in a war zone, he barters with God. Bring him back alive, and he’ll make it right with his girl.

All I want is Emma. I need her, and I fight for her memory. A story. A smile. Anything. But it’s all blank.

Emma is not his girl anymore. Time has skipped by and life’s been hard. She strips to pay the bills, waitresses to fill the hours between classes and her third job. All while working to be the best mama she can be to the little girl who will never know her daddy. Even though Grayson abandoned her, she mourned his death. Until he calls, and everything she knew was wrong.

It’s him. The him that ruined my life. That made my life. That confused my mind to the point that I can’t figure out if I’ve been destroyed or set free. The him that… is… dead.

He’s back with one objective–Emma Kingsley–and she never sees it coming.

Scoring His Heart (beware - not for the weak's eyes)

I have to say, sometimes, perhaps I should read the descriptions of books a bit better.  I had really no idea where this book was going to go.  Now, keep in mind, this is not a YA book AT ALL!!!!!!

Zoe Logan has always believed that those she loves will always leave her. It’s why she fights so hard against anyone getting close, but when sexy defense Gavin Ferrara zeroes in on her, she finds herself falling hard and exploring the hidden parts of herself that he brings out in her.
Gavin’s always trusted that playing hockey is the most important thing to him. But when a strange encounter from months ago leads to more between him and the local bar owner’s daughter, he’s torn between what he wants and what’s best.
WARNING: This book contains a threesome hot enough to scorch the sheets, a dirty talking Russian, a bisexual Italian, the college virgin who brings both of them to their knees, and the best anatomy and physiology study session ever.

My Review:
As I said before, this was not the sweet, love story I had thought it was.  I misread and missed the "Warning" that I see in the synopsis they gave us.  And please do not misunderstand me, I did not let this influence my review.  But it was pretty much outside my comfort zone here.  I am all for an all consuming love affair with some raunchy language, but this bordered on the erotic line too much for me.  I liked the underlying love story between Gavin and Zoe.  The way that they tried to fight what they were feeling but let themselves admit their true feelings was very realistic.
Now the sub plot with Misha was a bit hard for me to take.  He seemed like a fish out of water in a way.  Not really knowing what he wanted out of anything including life.  And there is more there than a threesome - there is a story there between Gavin and Misha even if it is not being told.
As I said, I tried to keep an open mind and after reading a bunch of YA recently, it was hard not to be initially shocked by the immediate sex and mature subject matters.  So overall I would give this a 3 star rating.  If I didn't feel that this was rushed and that it was a bit outside my comfort zone, I might have given it a bit more.

Zoe sighed. It was time to get this over with, and talk about the giant elephant in the room. “Look, I’m sorry about what I said, in my dad’s office… I was just… surprised and I didn’t know how to deal.”

He smiled, no teeth showing, but somehow it still made his eyes sparkle. “I think we were all surprised that night. Misha and I… we’ve never… I mean… we have… but… shit.” He stopped and dragged his fingers through his hair, half yanking at it. “That was the first time, you know.”

“I screwed up the first kiss?” she finally managed out, trying to keep a light tone, when she felt anything but that.

He laughed. “Not the first kiss. Well, kinda… It was just the first one where… we weren’t with someone else.”

She blinked, and her heart flipped. “What do you mean?”

Gavin’s cheeks darkened into a deep rose. “Misha and I… our tastes run a little… exploratory.”

Exploratory? What did that mean? She watched Gavin as closely as he watched her, trying to glean…

Oh. Oh. Holy shit. He was talking about threesomes. She felt her eyes widen, felt the sharp intake of her breath. “You… uh… with a girl? Or… another guy?”

Gavin chuckled. “That’s your question? I tell you fucking tends to be a team sport in my house and you’re wondering if it needs to be a girl or a guy?”

She couldn’t speak. She couldn’t even form the words. Not because it stunned her, though it did do that. But because the idea of Misha and Gavin with a girl in between them sent scorching wet heat straight between her legs.

Gavin’s eyes took on a knowing gleam. “Does that turn you on?”

“What? No!” she protested. What kind of question was that? A valid one, she told herself. Wasn’t she just thinking about that? What if she was the meat in a Misha-Gavin sandwich?

Jesus. She needed to stop thinking.

His eyes searched hers. He leaned forward at the same time and a thoughtful expression crossed his features. “Huh. It does.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Okay,” Gavin nodded. “I’ll concede. For now. The idea of me and Misha together doesn’t make you hot, just as imagining me and Misha both touching a beautiful pair of breasts like yours doesn’t get you hot.”

“It doesn’t,” she replied hotly. “Don’t make assumptions about me.” Fuck, she was a lousy liar, because every dirty word he said traveled straight to her core.

“Oh, I’m not making any assumptions,” he replied, smiling. “I think you find it hot. Plain and simple.”

“You’re wrong.” Oh, he so isn’t, you chickenshit. Zoe clenched her jaw shut and jutted her chin out in defiance. She’d carried this stupid torch for Gavin Ferrara for a long time, but she wasn’t about to let him gain the upper hand in this conversation.

A soft smile crossed his face as he leaned away from her. She was grateful for the reprieve, even as she resisted the urge to suck in the deepest breath of relief she could. “That’s not why I came here, anyway.”

“Why did you come here?”

“I…” He shifted in the seat, like he was sitting on pinecones. “I wanted to ask you out.”

“Ask me… What?”

“A date? I wanted to take you out on a date.”

“I thought you liked guys,” she blurted.

He laughed. “I thought we talked about that already. I do like guys. I also like girls. A lot more than I like guys.” He leaned forward again, resting his elbow on the counter. “And I really, really want to like you. A lot.”
